Medicine Hat is a city in southeastern Alberta, Canada. Located on the South Saskatchewan River, it is approximately 169 km (105 mi) east of Lethbridge and 295 km (183 mi) southeast of Calgary. With a population of 63,018 in 2016, it is the sixth largest city in Alberta and the most populous city in southeastern Alberta. It is also known as “Gas City” due to the natural gas fields in the area that were developed in the early 20th century.
