Shigatse is the second largest city in Tibet and is located around 280 km (174 miles) southwest of the capital of Lhasa. It is situated in the Nyang Qu River valley, at an elevation of 3,840 meters (12,600 feet). The city is known for its Buddhist monasteries and temples, such as the famous Tashi Lhunpo Monastery, and is the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama.
